“Would it be okay if we don’t go sharing today? I have a headache.” As the text popped up on my phone from Melanie, I contemplated how to respond. On one hand, I wanted to be sensitive to what was going on in her life, but I also really wanted to challenge her to trust the Lord to work through her even in the midst of weakness. Because of busy schedules, the time I had with Melanie was limited, so I wanted to make the most of the time we did have.
We ended up settling on a compromise–we would go sharing, but I would do most of the talking since she was not feeling well. As we wandered around the student center, we met Bianca. Using a picture survey, Bianca shared with us what was going on in her life, and some of her thoughts about God. Through her responses, it was clear that she wanted to know God, so we asked if we could share a booklet explaining who Jesus is with her.
As we went through the booklet, you could practically see the lightbulbs going off in Bianca’s head. She indicated that she had given control of her life to Christ, but she had a lot of questions about her young faith. Melanie invited Bianca to Destino, the Latino outreach of Cru that Melanie helps lead. Bianca thanked us repeatedly for coming to talk to her and has been a regular at Destino meetings ever since.
Perhaps even sweeter is that we’ve been able to meet with Bianca on a weekly basis to go through some basic foundational truths of the Christian faith. Not only has Bianca’s faith been growing, but so has Melanie’s and Stephanie’s, Melanie’s roommate whom she has invited to our meetings!
Melanie still had a headache when we left the conversation with Bianca that first day, but instead of feeling lethargic, she was bubbling over with joy. “Wow. That was incredible! I’m so glad we went! I’m so in awe of God right now. I still have the headache, but it doesn’t even matter because God is so much greater.”
I couldn’t agree more, Melanie. I couldn’t agree more.
